Judith and Peregrine Taverner travel to London after their father’s death and discover that their appointed guardian is Julian St John Audley, Earl of Worth, a man Judith has already found intolerably high-handed. Their entry into Regency society brings them into contact with fashionable clubs, Brighton entertainments and the Prince Regent’s circle.

When Peregrine survives a series of suspicious accidents, Judith begins to suspect that someone is trying to control the Taverner inheritance. The novel combines romance with a mystery in which social reputation, guardianship and family money conceal a more direct threat.
