Elizabeth Bennet meets the wealthy Fitzwilliam Darcy when he arrives in Hertfordshire with his friend Charles Bingley. Darcy’s reserve and Elizabeth’s quick judgement turn mutual interest into hostility, while Bingley’s attachment to Jane Bennet is disrupted by class prejudice, family embarrassment and the interference of those around him.
After Elizabeth rejects Darcy’s proposal, his explanatory letter forces her to reconsider George Wickham, her own assumptions and Darcy’s conduct. Lydia Bennet’s reckless elopement then threatens the family’s reputation. Darcy’s discreet intervention and Elizabeth’s changed understanding allow both to confront the pride and prejudice that have prevented a more honest relationship.
