Mansfield Park

Fanny Price is sent from her poor Portsmouth home to be raised by wealthy relatives at Mansfield Park. Treated as dependent rather than equal, she grows up quietly observant and attached to her cousin Edmund, whose plans for the church distinguish him from the more worldly members of the Bertram family.

The arrival of Henry and Mary Crawford unsettles the household through flirtation, amateur theatricals and competing ideas of marriage and duty. Fanny’s refusal to accept a materially advantageous match tests whether moral judgement can survive social pressure, family authority and economic dependence.
