A young Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz arrives in Britain to marry George III, a king she has never met. The marriage is both personal and dynastic, and the couple must form a partnership under the pressure of court politics, royal duty and George’s serious illness.
The novel, written with Shonda Rhimes and based on the television series, fictionalises the early relationship of Queen Charlotte and George III while also following an older Charlotte confronting a succession crisis. It uses real royal figures within an alternate version of Georgian society rather than presenting a conventional historical biography.
