England and Francia, AD 936. Einar and the Wolf Coats have entered the court of Æthelstan after becoming disillusioned with events in Norway. When Louis d’Outremer prepares to return from English exile and claim the throne of West Francia, Æthelstan sends the warband with a message for a noble whose support Louis requires.
The mission carries them into Brittany and a region divided by Viking attack, Christian lordship and rival claims to power. Their diplomatic assignment conceals another objective, forcing Einar to judge whether service to a king can be reconciled with the independence of a company that has survived by choosing its own loyalties.
