Jorvik, AD 935. Einar has turned away from war and is trying to establish himself as a poet, but an attack brings Affreca back into his life. She believes he should raise a force against Thorfinn and seeks the legendary Raven Banner, said to grant victory to the army carrying it.
The search draws Einar through Norse settlements and the competing claims of rulers including Eric Bloodaxe. As several factions pursue the same symbol of divine favour, Einar must decide whether the banner is a weapon, a political story or a trap designed to force him back onto the path others have chosen for him.
