Juana María de los Dolores de León Smith

Juana María de los Dolores de León Smith was a Spanish noblewoman who met the British officer Harry Smith after the storming of Badajoz in 1812. Still a teenager, she married him within days and accompanied him through the remaining Peninsular campaigns, later travelling with his postings in Britain, India and South Africa. Her energy and adaptability became part of military legend, and the South African town of Ladysmith was named in her honour.

Georgette Heyer’s The Spanish Bride fictionalises Juana’s marriage and experiences during the Peninsular War, drawing heavily on memoirs and military records. The novel presents campaign life from a woman’s viewpoint while following Wellington’s army through retreat, battle and occupation. Juana’s real movements were so extensive that the story requires less invention than many historical romances.
