Spain, 1810. French armies dominate much of the peninsula while Britain and its allies cling to Cádiz with the help of the Royal Navy. Lieutenant Hamish Williams is drawn into operations with Spanish partisans behind French lines.

Guerrilla warfare exposes Williams to betrayal, reprisal and the difficulty of identifying friend from enemy. A planned raid risks becoming a trap unless he can get warning back to the British lines before confidence in the allied cause costs lives.

Cádiz is strategically important because it remains a base for Spanish resistance and British naval support while much of the country is under French control. Williams's work with partisans places him inside a form of warfare that depends on local knowledge and civilian cooperation. Success requires judging motives in communities where helping either army can bring retaliation from the other.
