Southern Africa, 1828. Reports that Shaka is preparing another campaign bring Hervey back to the Cape and north towards the Zulu kingdom with a small escort of dragoons and mounted rifles. At the royal kraal he finds a society under severe strain, where military mobilisation, royal authority and mass killing have made every alliance dangerous.
Shaka’s assassination opens a succession struggle and wider civil violence. Separated from much of his force, Hervey must escort a royal woman across hostile territory while rival factions seek control of the kingdom. The novel follows the human consequences of political upheaval rather than treating the Mfecane as a simple story of one ruler’s aggression.
