The Tigress of Mysore

by Allan Mallinson Book 14 in the Matthew Hervey series.

4.4(626)

After the Coorg campaign, Hervey expects a period of recovery for his regiment and family. Instead, the governor-general asks him to lead a mobile force against Thuggee and dacoit networks whose raids threaten travellers, allied rulers and East India Company authority across southern and central India.

The task cannot be solved by a conventional battlefield victory. Hervey must work through informants, police agents, princely jurisdictions and communities where banditry, patronage and resistance overlap. As the campaign becomes more violent and politically ambiguous, the novel places the regiment within the coercive expansion of Company rule that will help shape the later crisis of 1857.
