In the 1770s, Nicholas Ballantyne has withdrawn to the Himalayan estate of Glenmire, hoping to leave behind the violence and intrigue that accompanied the East India Company’s rise. The peace secured after Plassey has proved temporary, and Warren Hastings asks Nicholas to return as conflict spreads among the Company, the Marathas, the Sikhs, the Rohillas and the rulers of Mysore.
Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, supported by France, threaten the Company’s position while internal rivalry weakens its government. Nicholas distrusts the institution he once served, but the danger to India and to his own family makes neutrality impossible. His return forces him to confront the price of the fortune and influence won in the previous novel.
