January 1829. Army reductions threaten the future of the 6th Light Dragoons, leaving Hervey’s plans for command and promotion in doubt. He accepts a temporary appointment as a British observer with the Imperial Russian Army and travels through St Petersburg to the Balkan theatre.
The assignment is meant to keep him outside the fighting between Nicholas I’s Russia and Mahmud II’s Ottoman Empire. Instead, campaigning conditions and personal loyalties draw Hervey and Edward Fairbrother into active danger. At Kulevicha, observation gives way to battle as the Russian army attempts to break Ottoman resistance and open the road across the Balkans.
