With Moore at Corunna

Terence O’Connor, the quick-witted son of an officer in the Mayo Fusiliers, receives a commission as the Peninsular War begins and sails with the regiment to Portugal. Early adventures at sea are followed by service in the campaigns against Napoleon’s armies, where his initiative repeatedly brings him responsibilities beyond his age and rank.

Terence experiences the British advance into Spain and the retreat that ends at Corunna. Separated from conventional command at points in the campaign, he also works with Portuguese troops and irregular forces. The novel combines his rapid military education with the logistical confusion, divided allied command and hard marching that characterised the early Peninsular fighting.
