The Tiger and the Thief
Bill “Smudger” Smith has hidden his past as a London wharf thief inside the ranks of the East India Company’s army. He still thinks about escape, but the very skills he learned in the streets—stealth, deception and reading other people’s intentions—make him valuable when the Company needs information that ordinary soldiers cannot obtain.
Smudger is sent toward Seringapatam to gather intelligence on Tipu Sultan’s defences. Infiltration places him in greater danger than open battle because discovery would leave him without the protection of uniform or army. The novel links the habits of a former street thief with the espionage surrounding the Company’s campaigns in Mysore, where a small piece of information can alter the fate of an assault.
