Ursula Revell tells her own story after an abduction places her aboard a vessel commanded by the formidable Japhet Bly, whose identity and motives are more complicated than they first appear. The voyage carries her across the Atlantic toward South America, through pursuit, cutting-out actions and encounters with violent men who treat the ocean as a space beyond ordinary protection.
Farnol uses the Georgian Atlantic world for a romance driven by mobility and danger. Ships connect Britain to colonial ports, slave-hunting violence and rival maritime interests, while Ursula’s first-person voice keeps the adventure centred on the cost of being carried through those networks without consent. The novel’s American title, Winds of Chance, emphasises the same governing idea: fortune changes quickly at sea, but character determines what the protagonists do with it.
