Warrior: The Druids’ Lair

by Simon Scarrow Book 2 in the Warrior series.

4.3(1,271)

Britain, AD 18. Caratacus enters a remote Druid sanctuary where study is combined with harsh physical training and ritual discipline. An older novice, Eboricus, terrorises weaker pupils and tests the young prince’s ability to gain allies without relying on royal status. The episode develops the skills of observation, endurance and leadership that Caratacus will later use in tribal politics and war.

The sanctuary gives Caratacus an education in authority before he possesses any real power. He must negotiate status among other boys, endure ritual discipline and learn when royal birth is an advantage and when it creates resentment. The episode prepares the future resistance leader by showing that command begins with observation, alliance and self-control rather than simply courage in battle.
