The Battle of Teutoburg Forest took place in AD 9, when Germanic forces led by Arminius ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions under Varus. The terrain, weather, surprise, and betrayal combined to create a catastrophe. Rome lost men, standards, and confidence in the possibility of easy control beyond the Rhine.
