Reign of Vespasian
69–79 CE
Vespasian emerged victorious from the civil wars of AD 69 and established a new imperial dynasty. His government restored finances, confirmed provincial loyalties and rebuilt institutions damaged by Nero's fall and the struggle among rival emperors.
The reign combined practical administration with continuing military commitments in Judaea, Britain and the Rhine provinces. Vespasian also began major building projects in Rome, including the Flavian Amphitheatre.
The Marcus Didius Falco novels take place from AD 70 to 77. Falco's investigations repeatedly connect ordinary crime and family life with the political consolidation, taxation and provincial government of Vespasian's regime.
