Vespasian, now governor of Africa, is ordered by Nero to recover Roman citizens enslaved by a desert kingdom beyond the settled province. The mission becomes a march through hostile country, with revolt, pursuit, thirst and exhaustion threatening the rescue party. While Vespasian struggles to bring the captives home, Nero’s rule in Rome grows more unstable and the question of succession becomes increasingly dangerous.

The African mission places Roman authority beyond the roads and garrisons that normally sustain it. Vespasian must negotiate with communities the empire does not directly control while keeping a rescue force supplied in difficult terrain. The episode also contrasts frontier command with Nero’s increasingly unpredictable court, reminding Vespasian that military success can make a senator more visible to a suspicious emperor.
