Roman Danube Frontier

The Danube frontier developed as Roman power expanded into the Balkans and Central Europe. Forts, roads, fleets and provincial commands guarded crossings and managed relations with peoples beyond the river.
The frontier was never static. Dacian, Sarmatian, Germanic and other communities could be enemies, allies, trading partners or recruits. Emperors used the Danube both as a defensive system and as a launch point for campaigns beyond the province.
The Empire novels use the Danube frontier when Marcus Aquila and the Tungrians are sent into rough military country far from Britain and Rome.
