Reign of Caligula
37–41 CE
Caligula initially benefited from his descent from Germanicus and the unpopularity of Tiberius's final years. His reign soon became associated in surviving elite sources with executions, confiscations and claims to divine honours.
A conspiracy involving praetorian officers killed Caligula, his wife and their daughter in AD 41. The Senate considered restoring republican government, but the guard proclaimed Claudius emperor.
The final section of I, Claudius depicts Caligula's court through a mixture of ancient testimony, satire and Graves's fictional reconstruction.
