The arena overturns Verus's former identity. Rank, citizenship and military reputation no longer protect him once he becomes property whose survival depends on entertaining spectators. Bryher's separate journey gives the story a second perspective on displacement, allowing the novella to explore how violence fractures households long after a battle has ended and how reunion requires more than simply escaping captivity.
