Correus and Flavius have gained rank and respect, but their careers now bind them to different faces of Domitian’s rule. Flavius becomes a trusted imperial adviser, working close to a ruler whose suspicion can transform favour into danger. Correus is given responsibility for organising the emperor’s games before being sent back towards Germania, where renewed resistance threatens the frontier.
Correus attempts to negotiate a settlement that could prevent thousands of deaths, while intelligence about a wider plot places the brothers and their household at risk. Spectacle in Rome and coercion at the border prove to be related instruments of imperial authority: both depend on controlling what soldiers, senators and crowds are permitted to see. The brothers must coordinate across distance before Domitian’s court destroys the very family its service has elevated.
