AD 85. With Agricola recalled to Rome, Centurion Faustus Valerianus is assigned to help the exiled prince Tuathal Techtmar recover a throne in Hibernia. The mission is deliberately unofficial: Roman officers, Irish warbands and merchants all hope to gain from the expedition without committing the empire openly. Faustus must train men whose loyalties belong first to clan and king, then decide how far Roman methods can be imposed on an ally’s war.
Across the sea, Roman strength in Caledonia is being reduced and former victories begin to look temporary.
