Neil Denby is a British author of historical military fiction who previously wrote extensively in the field of education. After retiring from academic work, he turned to fiction and now lives in a West Yorkshire village, dividing his time between writing and voluntary activities. His professional publications include work on teacher education and classroom assessment, while his historical novels reflect a longstanding interest in the institutions, beliefs and military organisation of the ancient world.

Denby is best known for the Quintus Roman Thrillers, beginning with Legionary. The series follows Julius Quintus Quirinius and his comrades through campaigning, rebellion and frontier warfare, combining Roman military hierarchy with the practical hardships of service. Subsequent titles include Decanus, Optio, Centurion, Scutarius, Speculator and Evocatus. He is also developing the Leinster Chronicles, a trilogy set in twelfth-century Ireland during a period of dynastic conflict and Anglo-Norman expansion.
