Promoted to decanus, Julius Quintus Quirinius sails with his cohort on a reconnaissance mission to Britannia. Augustus wants intelligence about the island and its tribes, but a violent storm scatters the Roman vessels before they can establish a secure landing. The missing legionaries have been captured by a local tribe that has no intention of returning them alive. Quintus organises a rescue with limited men, uncertain allies and no reliable route back to the ships.
