Decanus
First published 2023
Promoted to decanus, Julius Quintus Quirinius sails with his cohort on a reconnaissance mission to Britannia. Augustus wants intelligence about the island and its tribes, but a violent storm scatters the Roman vessels before they can establish a secure landing. Quintus is separated from part of his unit and must decide which Britons can be trusted while searching unfamiliar country.
The missing legionaries have been captured by a local tribe that has no intention of returning them alive. Quintus organises a rescue with limited men, uncertain allies and no reliable route back to the ships. His new rank makes him responsible for comrades who may question his judgement, and success depends on adapting Roman training to terrain and opponents the army has not yet learned to understand.
