Centurion Quintus Quirinius cannot prevent loyal members of his irregular cohort from being punished for alleged dereliction, and the decision destroys much of the trust he has spent years building. A daring rescue improves his standing, but clandestine meetings and unexplained orders persuade the exhausted soldiers that their commander is again risking them for interests they do not share.

The cohort is ordered to protect Nero Claudius Drusus from the consequences of his own aggressive campaigning. Quintus’s men help their general achieve an apparently impossible objective, yet victory does not guarantee release or safe passage to Rome.
