Virgil was Rome’s major epic poet and author of the Aeneid, Eclogues and Georgics.

Virgil wrote during the transition from civil war to Augustan rule. The Eclogues, Georgics and Aeneid connect pastoral, agriculture, myth, exile, empire and the destiny claimed for Rome under Augustus.

He belongs in Classical for pages on Augustan literature, Roman foundation myth, Troy, Aeneas and imperial ideology. The Aeneid is essential background for Roman identity and for later literary treatments of conquest and loss.
