Julius Caesar

by Lindsay Powell

First published 2026

2.5(5)

Julius Caesar follows Caesar from aristocratic beginnings and political danger under Sulla through his consulship, the conquest of Gaul and the civil war against Pompey and the senatorial coalition. His military writing, cultivation of popular support and use of clemency are examined alongside the violence through which he accumulated unprecedented authority in the Roman Republic.

The account continues through Caesar’s Egyptian intervention and relationship with Cleopatra to his dictatorship and assassination on the Ides of March 44 BC. Powell also considers the legends created by ancient biography, Shakespeare and later political culture. This expanded Collector’s Edition is scheduled for 27 October 2026; an earlier compact version with Powell’s introduction appeared in 2022 under the subtitle Epic and Legendary Leaders.
