Italy in the reign of Tiberius. After the violence of Rome, Carbo seeks recovery in the countryside with his companions, but an attack by a bandit gang turns refuge into catastrophe. The surviving group follows the raiders through estates, roads and criminal markets where isolated communities receive little protection from the state.

The pursuit eventually carries Carbo towards Sicily and the brutal world of the mines. Military skill can identify tracks and defeat ambushes, but the deeper conflict concerns slavery, vengeance and whether a traumatised veteran can protect others without returning entirely to the man he was in the legions.
