Birdsong

Stephen Wraysford arrives in Amiens in 1910 to stay with the Azaire family and becomes involved in a passionate relationship that changes the course of his life. When the story moves to the Western Front, Stephen is an officer in the British army, enduring trench warfare, tunnel fighting and the destruction of the Somme. The novel sets a private pre-war love affair against the industrial violence of the First World War and follows the long effects of memory, grief and survival.
