Snow Country

Snow Country follows lives unsettled by war, poverty and emotional damage in Austria between the First World War and the rise of fascism. Anton Heideck, a journalist marked by his earlier experiences, and Lena, a young woman trying to escape a harsh rural background, are drawn toward the same Alpine sanatorium and the damaged world around it. The novel returns to the Austrian setting associated with Human Traces, using the clinic, the mountains and the instability of the interwar years to explore memory, desire and recovery.
