Austria in the early twentieth century is a place of intellectual confidence shadowed by approaching catastrophe. Their paths converge at Schloss Seeblick, the Alpine sanatorium first established in Human Traces. By the early 1930s the political atmosphere has darkened, and private hopes are tested against economic hardship, nationalism and the rise of fascism. The novel uses the clinic and its patients to explore memory, desire and the fragile possibility of recovery after war.
