Early Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis

1850–1914 CE

The later nineteenth century saw major changes in the treatment and classification of mental illness. Asylum doctors, neurologists and psychologists argued over heredity, trauma, degeneration, hysteria, sexuality, memory and the relationship between body and mind.

Psychoanalysis emerged from this wider medical world, but it did not replace older institutions overnight. Clinics, sanatoria and private consulting rooms existed beside locked wards, experimental therapies and social assumptions that often limited patients’ freedom.

Human Traces makes this intellectual and clinical world central to its story, while Snow Country returns to the sanatorium as a place shaped by memory, treatment and emotional damage.
