When RAF pilot Geoff Wensley is separated from his black cat, Lord Gort, she sets out across wartime England to find him. Her instinctive journey carries her through railway stations, military camps, bombed towns and airfields, bringing her into the lives of soldiers, civilians and aircrew whose routines have been transformed by the war.
Lord Gort experiences the evacuation from Dunkirk, the bombing of Coventry and the dangers of RAF operations while remaining recognisably a cat rather than a human narrator in animal form. Her search links a series of intimate stories about loneliness, courage, bereavement and survival during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz.
