In the Shadows of the Blitz
First published 2014
London, September 1940. As bombing begins to transform the capital, DCI Frank Merlin investigates the disappearance of Polish RAF pilot Ziggy Kilinski and a wave of looting taking advantage of damaged streets and abandoned buildings. A separate Soviet operation to recover missing gold soon draws airmen, émigrés, criminals, academics and intelligence agents into the same inquiry.
The investigation reaches beyond London through connections with pre-war Poland, the Spanish Civil War and Stalin’s Soviet Union. Merlin must work in a city under attack while determining whether apparently ordinary crimes are being used to conceal international espionage. The Battle of Britain and the first phase of the Blitz provide the immediate setting, while the presence of Polish forces in Britain and Soviet intelligence activity broaden the case into a wartime mystery in which political loyalties are as important as conventional evidence.
