In June 1944, Ginnie Travis works in her father’s London furniture shop while bombing raids continue. Her sister Shirley’s pregnancy forces the two young women to stay with an aunt in Shropshire, where Ginnie falls for the American officer Nick Miller before learning that he has a fiancée at home.
After their father is killed in an air raid, Ginnie must support Shirley and her child and prevent the family business from being lost. Returning to the shop, she takes responsibility for rebuilding a livelihood amid wartime shortages, grief and the uncertain promises of romance.
