Vilhjalmur Stefansson was a Canadian Arctic explorer and ethnographer who promoted adaptation to northern environments and organised major expeditions. His attempt to claim Wrangel Island through a privately organised settlement ended in disaster, with Ada Blackjack the only survivor of the initial party.
