Andrew Martin traces the history and romance of the European sleeping car, following the night train from its period of luxury and international prestige to an era when many famous services had disappeared. The story encompasses grand expresses, sleeping-car companies, borders, dining cars and the practical organisation required to move passengers across Europe while they slept.
Martin also travels on surviving routes and searches for remnants of vanished services, comparing modern rail journeys with the mythology created by trains such as the Orient Express. The book is particularly concerned with the interwar high point of international sleeper travel, when railways linked capitals through a culture of timetables, porters, compartments and transcontinental journeys later challenged by aviation and changing railway economics.
