York, winter 1906. Jim Stringer has finally become an official detective for the North Eastern Railway, but his first days in the job are dominated by violence: two brothers are shot dead and the station’s lost-luggage porter points him towards pickpockets and railway thieves operating through the city. Jim is ordered to go undercover and enters an underworld far removed from the respectable face of the railway.
Working under an assumed identity, he becomes involved with a gang whose ambitions extend beyond petty theft and whose plans eventually carry him away from York. At home, his wife Lydia is pregnant and increasingly exposed to the dangers created by his investigation. The novel uses the station, back streets, pubs and railway offices of Edwardian York to show how criminal networks could exploit the enormous movement of people and property through the rail system.
