The Moquette Mystery
First published 2025
Britain, summer 1938. May Mitton, a young Yorkshire woman, becomes involved in a murder investigation after a policeman gives her an unusual clue: a piece of moquette cut from a railway seat. Identifying the fabric means understanding where it was used and tracing a journey through the transport networks of late interwar Britain.
May’s search takes her through London, Halifax, the Isle of Wight and Oxford as a seemingly ordinary piece of upholstery becomes the link between places and suspects. The novella uses the distinctive design culture of 1930s public transport as part of the detective method, setting an intimate mystery in the final summer before the European crisis of 1938 gave way to war the following year.
