France, 1916. Jim Stringer has enlisted and serves with a railway unit supplying the British Army on the Western Front. On the first day of the Somme he is trapped in a shell hole under fire, while an earlier unexplained death within his unit continues to trouble the men who must now depend on one another to survive.
At night Jim and his comrades operate ammunition trains through a landscape shattered by artillery, where railway work is as essential to the offensive as it is exposed to enemy fire. A military policeman investigates the death within the unit and suspicion begins to turn towards Jim himself. The murder mystery is inseparable from the logistics and fear of the Battle of the Somme, showing the industrial railway system functioning directly inside modern warfare.
