Joseph Goebbels

1897–1945

Joseph Goebbels was the Nazi propaganda minister and one of Adolf Hitler’s closest political allies. He shaped the regime’s public messaging, antisemitic agitation and mobilisation of German society during the Second World War.

Joseph Goebbels also held the offices or ranks of member of the Reichstag of the Weimar Republic, member of the Reichstag of Nazi Germany, Reich Chancellor, and Gauleiter. Joseph Goebbels belonged to the Goebbels family and operated within Nazi Germany; Germany. Joseph Goebbels was born in Rheydt and died in Führerbunker.

Rory ClementsEvil in High Places makes Joseph Goebbels’ relationship with a missing film star the reason Sebastian Wolff’s investigation becomes politically dangerous, showing how the propaganda minister’s private influence reaches into policing and the film industry. In Nemesis, Goebbels is central to the propaganda battle over the sinking of the Athenia, promoting the claim that Britain destroyed the liner to manipulate American opinion. Simon Scarrow’s A Death in Berlin sets another criminal investigation inside a capital where party leaders such as Goebbels can shield vice and violence from ordinary law. Erik Larson’s In the Garden of Beasts places Goebbels among the Nazi elite encountered by the American ambassador’s family as they slowly recognise the coercion and theatrical politics sustaining Hitler’s regime.
