Weimar Germany emerged after defeat in World War I and the fall of the German Empire. It produced remarkable art, cinema, nightlife and intellectual life, but also hyperinflation, paramilitary violence, political extremism and resentment over the Treaty of Versailles. Berlin became a symbol of both modernity and instability.
Weimar matters because it shows how a democratic republic can be culturally vibrant and politically vulnerable at the same time. Economic crisis and extremist mobilisation eventually helped destroy it. The setting is central to Philip Kerr’s Bernie Gunther novels and many spy, crime and political novels set in a city moving toward dictatorship.
