The final Share of Summer volume begins in 1932, when twenty-four-year-old Mollie Kaye leaves India with her family for China. Their stay ends in disappointment and bereavement, and after her father's death she returns to England needing to support herself through illustration, commercial art and eventually fiction.
Early children's books and the thriller Six Bars at Seven establish her as a writer and allow her to return to India. The memoir also records the Andaman Islands, the outbreak of the Second World War and her meeting with the Indian Army officer Goff Hamilton, bringing the published autobiography to the beginning of their relationship.
