In 1927 Mollie Kaye returns to India after years at school in England and immediately re-enters the family and social world of the Raj. Delhi seasons, amateur theatricals, travel and the expectations surrounding young British women are set beside her renewed attachment to the country she has continued to regard as home.

The memoir ranges through Kashmir, Rajputana, princely states and crowded markets while remaining centred on Kaye's relationship with her father, Cecil. Its recollections preserve the assumptions and pleasures of one colonial family during the interwar period as Indian political demands were increasingly challenging British rule.
