In the autumn of 1944, German forces retreat across France after the defeat at Falaise. Scattered soldiers, fuel shortages and broken command structures create a battlefield in which improvised units move independently and civilians cannot be certain which army will control a town the following day.
Caje Cole and his companions pursue a German force while hostile marksmen exploit the confusion. The chase carries both sides through ruined villages and contested roads, where revenge and survival begin to matter more than formal orders. Cole must distinguish genuine military threats from men using the retreat to settle private scores.
