At the beginning of the American Civil War, communities near the border between North and South divide before armies have established clear fronts. Families, neighbours and former friends are required to declare loyalty, while rumours of spies and armed irregulars make neutrality increasingly impossible.

The novel follows characters pulled into the conflict by local violence and political allegiance rather than formal military ambition. As the first campaigns begin, private choices become acts of treason to one side or the other. The dawn of rebellion is shown through people who do not yet understand how long the war will last or how completely it will transform them.

Border regions are especially volatile because allegiance may depend on county, family or immediate military control rather than a stable front line. Irregular violence can precede the arrival of organised armies and create grudges that survive long after commanders move on. The novel uses those local divisions to show the Civil War beginning as a social rupture before it becomes a sequence of famous campaigns.
