In June 1944, Captain Patrick Garstin and an SAS patrol parachute into occupied France to disrupt German reinforcements moving towards Normandy. The patrol evades enemy forces and attempts an extraordinary escape, but betrayal leads to capture, torture and the execution of most of the men under the Nacht und Nebel system.
After the war, surviving comrades and investigators pursue the Gestapo and SS personnel responsible. Lewis follows the patrol from mission to war-crimes inquiry, using family testimony to restore the individual histories behind the case. The book has also been published as Churchill’s Band of Brothers.
