The French Resistance developed after France’s defeat in 1940 and operated under German occupation and the Vichy regime. Resistance networks gathered intelligence, printed underground newspapers, helped fugitives, sabotaged transport and supported Allied operations. The movement included communists, Gaullists, students, clergy, workers, women and foreign fighters.
It mattered because resistance became central to French wartime memory, even though it was dangerous, fragmented and morally complex. Occupation created choices about collaboration, survival, silence and action. Resistance fiction by Alan Furst, Robert Harris, Kristin Hannah and many others uses secrecy, betrayal, courage and fear as core narrative material.
