By the fourth year of occupation, Paris is hungry, cold and dangerous for the radio operators and couriers linking Resistance cells to the outside world. A rapid series of arrests suggests that German direction-finding alone cannot explain how agents are being captured.
Alex agrees to assume a wealthy new identity and enter the social world surrounding the Gestapo operation. The plan may expose a traitor inside the Resistance, but it also requires him to live beside the men hunting his comrades and to maintain a disguise whose success depends on appearing comfortable with collaboration.
